User-To-System Integration


  User-To-System integration can be expanded to address different aspects of this technology:
User Interfaces and Productivity Tools:  Includes reports, screens, web pages, portals and documents.  These are the software components most visible to the user and most related to information access.
Data Access Technology:  Productivity Tools usually contain their own data access processes; however there now exists a category of software which specifically addresses the complexities of data access, called Enterprise Information Integration (EII).  EII middleware is used to provide a common gateway and one-point database access, in order to simplify the data access process.

 


  These user-interface categories are all common in business computing:

Reports

Data from one or more database applications can be queried and reported to the user in a read-only manner (on screen, paper, PDF, etc).  Reporting is part of most applications, but can also be performed externally by a reporting tool (ie: Microsoft Access or Crystal Reports)

Legacy Apps

The term "Legacy Application" means any existing database application with its own user interface.  User interfaces range from terminal-based, to DOS/character-based, to Windows and Web-based.   Data access is two-way through a dedicated, stand-alone program.

Portals

Portals were created to increase user efficiency by customizing the interface to legacy applications.  They are typically Web-based and combine access to multiple data sources.  Data access can be two-way and is "manual," meaning that the user initiates data lookup's.

Documents

Productivity tools, such as Word, Excel and Outlook are document-based applications.  The documents, themselves, become part of an organization's information collection (documents are called "unstructured" data because they do not reside in a database).   The content of documents also relates to traditional structured data in the enterprise.

How Do These User Interface Categories Relate to Veraterm?

Veraterm creates document-based links to relevant information, based on the content of the user's workspace.  Data access can be one or two-way and is "automatic," meaning that the user does not need to initiate data lookup's.  Veraterm integration is automatic and context-sensitive.
Veraterm can be used to open reports from within a document.  Which reports?  The ones that are relevant to the information in the document!
Veraterm can be used to access data in Legacy Apps from within a document.  Which data?  The records of entities (accounts, clients, patients, customers, products, seminars, services, etc) identified by the Veraterm parser so that the user does not need to initiate lookup's.
Veraterm operates as a portal to information in multiple systems.  The difference is the automatic document interface inherent to Veraterm

Veraterm is complimentary to Legacy Applications, Reporting and Productivity Tools.  Veraterm and Portals overlap in functionality, with separate indications.
